How to make liquid hand soap

This lovely liquid hand soap recipe is a breeze to whip up, smells divine, and costs a fraction of what you would pay for eco-friendly liquid hand soap at the supermarket.

Add to that the sense of empowerment you'll feel making it yourself, and there's no reason not to give this recipe a go.

Ingredients

  • 1 bar of soap, or equivalent in soap scraps
  • 1c boiling water
  • 1T honey (I use Manuka because it can help heal nicks and cuts)
  • 1T glycerol or glycerine (from the chemist or supermarket)
  • Few drops essential oil of your choice, eg. lemon, orange or rose (from chemist or health food store)
  • 1/3c cold water
Method
Grate soap. Pour boiling water into a bowl, add soap and whip with a hand blender.

Add honey, glycerol/glycerine and essential oil and whip again.

Allow to cool for 15 minutes and then whip again.

Add cold water and whip again.

Pour mixture into dispenser and it's ready to use.

Store any extra mixture in a labelled airtight container. Add an ingredients label to the container, so you can quickly see how to make it again next time.

  1. I made this and it was ridiculously thick and frothy, impossible to pour into the dispenser and on cooling it hardened somewhat as well - I followed your recipe to the letter, but have ended up throwing it all out - even tried a funnel to get it into the dispenser and it was too thick for that as well! Gutted.

  2. How disappointing. I wonder what went wrong. I have found that over time the mixture hardens somewhat in the dispenser, but I just pour in a little more water, give it a shake and it's good to go again. I didn't have the problems you're describing upon making it in the first place though. I wonder if more water would help. Maybe half a cup? I found it tricky to get the balance of water right between too watery and too thick. I found 1/3c good, but in your case maybe more would be better.

    1. I made this tonight. Although it was gluggy like the Anonymous from last year, it is a case of balancing how much water to put in, in order to dilute the soap. Smells wonderful!

    2. I'm glad it worked for you! I was starting to doubt myself. I wonder if different soap bases change the glugginess factor. What soap did you use?

  3. I made this last night and ended up with heaps of glue Hahaha, it was really frothy and gluggy , looked and felt revolting...though i must admit i didn't follow your recipe to the letter as i didn't print it out, also my block of soap was huge so i ended up with about 6 litres of the stuff. Oh well, it was fun giving it a go.. bit like being back at kindy :) the good ole days!
