How to make hot chocolate

Paul and I love drinking hot chocolate in the evening, but it can get pretty pricey so I've started making my own basic mix.
Ingredients
  • 2c icing sugar
  • 1c cocoa
  • 2c milk powder
  • 1/4t salt
Instructions
Sift icing sugar and cocoa into a bowl. Stir in milk powder and salt.

Mix well until evenly combined and pour into an airtight container. (We re-use our old Cadbury drinking chocolate containers. This mixture fills 1.5 containers.)

Use 1-2t per drink.

  1. Hi Emma, congratulations on your pregnancy. I make my own hot choc but we have serious dairy issues so can't do one with milk powder.

We just heat some soy or rice milk and add 1tsp of cocoa and 1tsp of icing sugar per cup of milk (soy or rice). If I can be bothered I mix a cup of each in a jar and then just use 2tsp in a cup of milk. Easy peasy.

  2. Hey Meg, you've got me thinking about trying a dairy-free version, just for fun. I wonder if coconut milk would make a nice base. And then you would get all the lovely benefits of the coconut too, which include building immunity and lowering cholesterol, among other things. 1. Sorry, I didn't make that very clear. I usually add the powder to about 2/3 cup boiling water and 1/4 cup milk.
